Michael is a versatile musician, enjoying a variety of styles from classical to contemporary/pop, musical theatre and jazz. His regular solo and ensemble playing includes bands and orchestras that perform classical music, musical theatre, contemporary or popular music and sacred/church music. Michael has performed in Australia, New Zealand, the USA, Europe, and Asia.
Having started at an early age, Michael brings 28 years of experience in teaching piano and keyboard. As a teacher, Michael believes in the importance of high standards for technique and musicality but appreciates adapting teaching methods to engage the modern student. Whether preparing students for examinations and performances or teaching them to play along to their favourite music on their smartphone. Michael appreciates the individuality of every student, that there is a need to tailor lessons to suit the student and, when appropriate, include music technology as a means to enhance their learning.
Michael has worked as a Music Director and Conductor for over 25 years, having conducted choirs, orchestras, show bands and various other ensembles. Michael has musically directed musicals, operas and largescale events, regularly conducting bands, orchestras or choral ensembles. Michael also works as an accompanist and repetiteur throughout Sydney and beyond.
In addition to his live work, Michael has experience with Music Technology – focusing on recording and music production. This interest has broadened into audio, specifically live mixing bands and vocalists. Michael also contracts as an arranger for transcribing music or re-arranging existing music.
Whether it's ensemble playing, conducting or teaching, Michael is passionate about excellence but not compromising on the enjoyment that comes from music.
Michael's formative years studying piano were in Perth, Western Australia, with Dr Robert Curry (principal of Sydney Conservatorium High School & former Head of Classical Music, WAAPA) and Associate Professor Gerard Willems AM (former Chair of Keyboard, Sydney Conservatorium of Music). Michael's study at the Sydney Conservatorium increased his passion as a performer and accompanist. It solidified his pursuit in conducting and working with composers to perform New Music.
