Michael has worked as an accompanist for over 25 years, specialising in choral ensembles and soloists. Whether you need an accompanist for an AMEB or school exam, a performance, or everyday experience performing with another musician, Michael would be delighted to work with you.
An experienced accompanist can lift your performance musically and support you in leading up to and during your performance. Establishing trust between a soloist and an accompanist is essential and can positively impact your performance.
What information do I need to provide?
Depending on the type of performance and complexity of the music, you should give as much notice as possible. Providing a copy of the music before rehearsal(s) is also strongly encouraged.
If it is an exam, you should give the date, time, and place of the exam and the instrument and grade. If it is a different type of performance, similarly the date, time and place, and the instrument and piece(s) to be performed. Knowing the venue and type of piano available ahead of time are essential details to learn. Providing a copy of the score ahead of rehearsal(s) is recommended for the best use of rehearsal time.

FAQs
What instruments or ensembles do you accompany?
Michael regularly performs with a variety of instruments and ensembles. Solo instrumentalists may require an accompanist for an exam or an audition. Choirs need an accompanist for rehearsals or a performance. Small ensembles might require the addition of a pianist for a particular piece. Michael is familiar with playing in many settings for different purposes. Contact Michael for more information.
I have an AMEB exam coming up soon. How many rehearsals will I need before the exam?
Michael will endeavour to support every soloist to give their best performance. This varies depending on the exam level, repertoire complexity, and the number of pieces requiring rehearsal. It’s best to contact Michael with as much information as possible to provide a quote. Please note, this can be an estimate – the number of rehearsals may change depending on how the initial rehearsal goes.
I study in the city. Could rehearsals be done at another location, for instance, my university or school?
Most rehearsals occur at the MTMUSIC studio; however, Michael can travel for rehearsals depending on the type of booking. This is usually for choirs or larger groups that rehearse in a regular space. For students at the Conservatorium or AIM, rehearsals can be arranged with advanced notice. Michael has a Working With Children Check, but it is less common for private rehearsals to occur at school for Secondary students unless an arrangement is in place beforehand.
